We managed to tear ourselves away from the dock in Marathon at 9:00, and joined our flotilla, m/v Coral Reefer (Glen & Jeri) and m/v Sea Dog (Terry & Beth) as they made their way out of Boot Key Harbor. We headed out past the reef to the gulf stream to do some trolling on our way to our first anchorage, Little Pine Key. Two of us worked a long grass line while the third boat kept to the reef to do his trolling ( he was towing a dinghy, so it was easier for him to stay in shallower water). The weather was the same as the day before, but we were traveling East so the wind and waves were at our back.
By the time we made our turn towards the inlet at Little Pine Key we had 2 Mahi and 1 King Mackerel for dinner (thanks Glen!). We lined up our boats behind Sea Dog and made our way through the harbor to the area we were to anchor. We let Sea Dog lead the way as he had been here a few times before and the waters were pretty shallow in places. Besides, Sea Dog drew the most water (5 ft) so if he made it through, we all could! As we entered the harbor a boat went past us that was just beautiful. It was all wood and was a tender transporting guest from Big Pine to this luxury resort on Little Pine Key. We found a spot, set the anchors and made lunch.
We all spent the afternoon taking care of things that needed to be done. Chip set up his hookah rig to his air tank and went under the boat to do some needed bottom cleaning, while Terry and Glen took their dogs over to the beach to....uh....take care of business. We decided to get together on the Coral Reefer for dinner around 6:30, Terry would pick us up in his Boston Whaler. We dined on Mahi, Mackerel, baked beans, fried potatoes, and tomato/mozzarella salad. Had a wonderful dinner, watched the sunset, swapped a few sea stories then went back to the boat. The winds picked up a bit and the boats were swinging so we all wanted to be on our own boats in case something happened, like dragging the anchor. We needed to get some sleep too, we have an early start in the morning, on to Shark River!
It was a good day.
