Sunday 4/5/09: we didn’t hear back from the diver we called so we called Jr at the prop shop. He had another diver he used and gave us the number. Scott (diver) showed up around 2:30, was in and out of the water within 20 minutes with the prop in hand. He made a phone call to Jr (shop owner), who happened to be in the area on his boat, so he stopped by our boat and picked up the prop at 3:00. Jr said he would try and have the prop ready in a day or so and off he went. At 5:00 (the same day) Jr called, said he would be by around 7:30 with the repaired prop. He showed up right on time, with a diver to put the prop back on. Stacy (diver #2) suited up and had the prop back in place in about a half hour. We are still amazed at the fast response we got from these guys! Late dinner, checked email and off to bed.
Monday 4/6/09: I called my cousin who lives in town to make arrangements to pick up their car for the day so we could run around town and grab some provisions and stop by West Marine to pick up a couple of dock lines and a new marine battery, eat lunch and go to the bank. The winds were pretty strong, tornado warnings in and around the area, so we called Rob & Emily to check on their status…..they were due to catch up with us in Carolina Beach by dinner time. They had tied up at Dock Holiday’s Marina in the afternoon to wait out a passing storm, so their expected arrival time was now around 7:30. Chip and I headed over to Sheran and Mike’s (cousin) for dinner and to visit for a while. We asked Rob to call us when he got to Snow’s Cut (cut through from Cape Fear River to the ICW) and sure enough just as ate the last bite of our dinner he called. Normally they (Rob & Emily) would have been fine to tie up the boat on their own, but with the strong South West winds we were experiencing, it would be very difficult for them…the wind would be blowing them away from the dock. We hated to eat and run, but had to. We made our apologies, said our good byes and Mike drove us back to the marina. As Chip and I got to the T-head we could see Emerald Sunset coming up the channel. It was a little tricky getting them tied up securely but we did….team effort! After securing the boat we all sat in the salon of Emerald Sunset and toasted to our friendship with a well deserved round of rum & coke.
Tuesday 4/7/09: Emerald Sunset pulled out about 30 minutes ahead of the Windfall, but we would soon be close behind. When we did catch up to them Emily and I took turns snapping shots of each others boat, then we bid our farewell and headed on to the first bridge of the day. Our next destination was Beaufort, but we made such good time today, and caught all the bridges right on time, that we forged ahead and made Oriental by 4:00 (we added another 20 miles to our travels today, and 20 less we have to travel tomorrow). We cruised from Wrightsville to just outside Beaufort with a 1947 Trumpy. This is a beautiful boat, but waaay too much bright work for this gal to want to do, but I appreciate the fact that someone else is doing it! She is called the SS Sophie and I have included a few photos of her.
When we got to the Neuse River things got a little “sporty”. The winds were out of the NW at about 25 – 30 knots with 2-3 footers, which means they were coming at us on our port bow. Not a bad ride compared to some we’ve had, but very wet! We pulled into Oriental and tied up the boat around 4:00. We tied up next to a couple from New England (a real lobsterman!) and after a few introductions the four of us headed out in search of dinner. When we got back to the marina Chip, Dave & Stacie headed up to the Tiki Bar (I think every city/town has one) which is located right behind the boat. I opted to stay inside (its freeeezing here). After a few minutes Chip comes running down to the boat, grabs the camera and mumbles something about Stacie jumping in the pool as he runs out of the door! Yep, this crazy woman changed into a bathing suit and jumped in the pool, and its like 40 degrees here! Brrrr.
